Jack Burns: What is Unique About Astronomy From the Moon? | Chai on the Moon |

Can our Moon help us explore some of the earliest epochs of the universe? Can there be telescopes on the far-side of the Moon that can study an era before galaxies or before even the first stars? Is there a way to protect astronomy on the Moon from competing commercial and national interests? Our guest, Professor Jack Burns, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics, both at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder, and is Vice President Emeritus for Academic Affairs and Research for the CU System. He has been thinking and advocating about telescopes on the Moon for over forty years, and he is the Principal Investigator of NASA's FARSIDE: A Low Radio Frequency Interferometric Array on the Lunar Farside. Sharei & Filijović: Do We Need a UN Parliament to Regulate Space Mining? | Chai on the Moon |

Mining on the Moon is on the horizon. But who decides who can mine and where? How do we know if there is too much mining and how do we prioritize competing interests on the Moon? In this episode of Chai on the Moon, we have a conversation with Dr. S. M. Sharei and Dr. Marko Filijović, who have a proposed a UN parliament to decide on these issues. They are both affiliated with the Center for UN Constitutional Research (CUNCR) [https://cuncr.org/] Reference: The U.N. needs to form a parliament to regulate space mining (2024) by Filijović and Sharei https://spacenews.com/the-un-needs-form-parliament-regulate-space-mining/ ShahrYar Mahmoud Sharei, PhD in International Law, is a principal in the U.N. Charter and global governance. He is currently the Executive Director of the Center for UN Constitutional Research (CUNCR) in Brussels. Marko Filijović, PhD in Security Studies, is a specialist in Outer Space security, geopolitics and resources, and a Research Fellow at the Center for UN Constitutional Research (CUNCR) in Brussels. Marko also serves on the editorial boards of the International Law Research journal in Toronto, Canada, and the Journal of Political Science and International Relations, based in New York. Michael Byers: Military Defense and Space Law on the Moon | Chai on the Moon |

The next couple of years are expected to see permanent presence on the Moon. Can there also be a military presence? The US Department of Defense has been spending money on developing concepts for military on the Moon, and for its presence in the cis lunar space, extending to the far side of the the lunar orbit. How serious are these plans and do these violate United Nations Outer Space Treaty of 1967? Our guest, Professor Michael Byers, holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. He also co-directs the Outer Space Institute, a global network of experts united by their commitment to transdisciplinary research that addresses grand challenges in the exploration and use of space. He is the author of "International Law and the Arctic", which won the 2013 Donner Prize. His latest book is “Who Owns Outer Space”, which he co-authored with Dr. Aaron Boley. Richard Green: Protecting Astronomy on the Moon | Chai on the Moon |

The Moon provides a unique environment to do astronomy. There are plans for telescopes that can potentially detect not just the first stars in the universe, but even the gas that formed those stars. But astronomy will have to compete commercial and other interests on the Moon. Our guest, Dr. Richard Green, is the Chair of a newly formed IAU Commission on Astronomy on the Moon, and here we talk about the potential of groundbreaking astronomy/science from the surface of the Moon. Recent Lava Flows on the Moon? | New Evidence from China’s Chang'e 5 Mission | Mr. Universe |

🌕 Could the Moon have been volcanically active when dinosaurs roamed the Earth? New evidence from rocks brought back by China’s Chang’e 5 mission suggests lava flows may have occurred just 100 million years ago — far more recently than previously thought! The dark patches we see on the Moon today were once believed to be the result of volcanic activity from over 3 billion years ago. Join Monte Belmonte and Salman Hameed as they explore this groundbreaking discovery and its implications for future lunar exploration and human settlements on the Moon. We know that supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies can create jets. Now, a jet system has been discovered that is 23 million light years long!! This is the largest structure created by an astronomical object. Here, Monte Belmonte and Salman Hameed talk about the larger significance of this phenomenal discovery. Name a New Moon! | Radiolab & IAU Contest to Name Earth’s Quasi-Moon | Mr. Universe |

Here’s your once-in-a-lifetime chance to name an object in space! 🚀 Radiolab, in partnership with the International Astronomical Union (IAU), has launched a contest to name a quasi-moon of Earth, and the competition is open until September 30th. A panel of experts will select 10 finalists, and YOU get to vote from November 1st to December 31st. The winner will be revealed in January 2025! In this episode, Monte, Kaliis, and Salman chat with Radiolab host Latif Nasser and Kelly Blumenthal, Director of the IAU Office of Astronomy Outreach (OAO). They explore what a quasi-moon is, the story behind the naming contest, and how YOU can participate in shaping space history. How Serious is the Problem of Light Pollution? |IAU OAO - Kainaat| Cosmic Gup Shup

This video on the challenge of increasing light pollution is a part of collaboration between International Astronomical Union's Office for Astronomy Research (IAU OAO) and Kainaat Studios. A companion essay for this video is available at: https://www.iau.org/public/themes/light_pollution/ Stars in the night sky have played a crucial role in the history of humans on this planet. They have not only helped us in providing appropriate times for planting crops and in finding directions in the middle of deserts and oceans, but our queries about their nature have also sparked some of the biggest revolutions in human perceptions of our place in the universe. But now the increasing glow from our light bulbs is threatening the existence of various species on the planet. A new study suggests that the night sky may be brightening at a rate of 7-10% each year! In this episode of Cosmic Gup Shup, astrophysicist Salman Hameed talks about the steps we can take to reduce light pollution and protect the night sky, which holds an important place in various cultures and societies.
